Who we are
The Bach Choir of Wellington performs choral music from the past four centuries, with a particular focus on the music of J.S. Bach and his contemporaries.
Our music director
Shawn Michael Condon is a music educator, conductor, and researcher, and was appointed as Music Director of the Bach Choir of Wellington in 2018. Shawn studied music education with a concentration in choral conducting and piano at the College of New Jersey. He taught both intermediate and secondary school choral music and music theory and kept a private piano studio. As a pianist, he’s served as repetiteur at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City and principal accompanist for the Princeton GirlChoir. Shawn holds a Master’s degree in Music, Mind, and Technology from the University of Jyväskylä (Finland). In addition to his work with the Bach Choir of Wellington, he directs Altissime at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School, and is the former chair of the Wellington Region of the New Zealand Choral Federation.
Our accompanist
Douglas Mews has served as our deputy music director and accompanist for nearly 30 years. Douglas studied organ and harpsichord with Anthony Jennings at Auckland University, followed by harpsichord studies with Bob van Asperen at the Royal Conservatory in the Hague.
